Newsticker: 150-600 f/5-6,3

I didn’t really want to write anything about this. But when I read through the nonsense that is being spouted in the forums again, perhaps a few facts.

There are rumors that the lens is a Sigma 150-600 f/5-6.3 converted to mFT, which is actually built for 35mm.

This is nonsense. The Sigma 150-600 has a USM (ultrasonic motor) focus drive. This is not usable with the mFT cameras – except with the Oly cameras with phase AF. The Panasonic cameras can’t do anything with it – not even the G9II. The focus element has to be completely redesigned so that it can be moved with linear motors or stepper motors. And this means that the entire lens has to be redeveloped.

UPDATE: Correction/addition. The newer stepper motor version can be used with mFT, “only” the electronics and the rear connection are missing.

There is a heated discussion that Sigma has claimed that it no longer develops lenses for mFT.

This is completely correct. The lens is also not a Sigma development, but an OMDS development.

UPDATE: Correction/addition: The OMDS development does not essentially concern the optics, but the electronics. This concerns the control of the focus motors and the IS. But changes have also been made to the optics.

It is even claimed that OMDS no longer produces anything at all.

That is complete nonsense. They manufacture both in Vietnam – where they mainly produce in quantity – and in Tokyo in their new, mysterious research center.

But the lens is not manufactured by OMDS because they are busy with other things in production. The lens is actually manufactured by Sigma, as is the 75mm f/1.8, for example.

200mm. Das ist bereits an der Grenze, wo so etwas noch zu verantworten ist. Da sollte man bereits einen massiven Baum neben sich haben.

The lens would be far too expensive.

Sure, everything is always too expensive. The front lens has a diameter of just under 10cm. That’s almost the size of the 150-400 or the 90-250, if you remember them. The former is priced at 7500 euros, the 90-250 at times at 10,000 euros. The 150-600 is expected to come onto the market for less than 3000 euros. That is an absolutely fair price for the performance on offer.

UPDATE: Correction/addition: The Sigma 35mm lens costs around 1600 euros. I found out the price of the OMDS lens, which is significantly lower than the rumored price, rather close to the Sigma lens.

Nobody needs that.

Sure, if you have the 150-400, you don’t need it. Those who have the 100-400 – usually don’t either. If necessary, they strap the MC-14 behind it. According to my information, a teleconverter is either not possible or not useful with the 150-600. It is therefore a special lens for people who need exactly this focal length range. As a professional, I’m thinking of motor sports. When a car like this comes shooting towards you, distance is life insurance. I preferred to do this with the Old Bigma (50-500) , exactly in the focal length range from 200 to 500mm. The 100-400 is a bit short there – when the guys accelerate on the straight, you only have a fraction of a second for your shot. With the MC-14, the exposure time is already too long, especially on forest trails or in bad weather.

So: Sigma doesn’t build shit. The thing will be good. Not everyone needs it. But for those who do, it’s an inexpensive, high-performance lens.

Cover picture: Rally with 500mm. Has several advantages: You’re far enough away that you don’t run the risk of the marshal having to scrape you off the hood. And the background is blurred by design – the fluttering tapes that have long been an integral part of rallies are blurred. And you can position yourself where you can take photos around the spectators.

  2. aber Motorsport und ähnliches ist doch gar nicht die Zielgruppe 🙂
    Kann Sigma kein 35-100/2.0 bauen? Da könnte ich mich evtl. hinreissen lassen bei OMDS noch was zu kaufen.

    1. Die meistverkauften Kameras im für Produktentscheidungen wichtigsten, japanischen Markt sind die beiden ausgesprochenen Wildlife- und Outdoorkameras E-M10IV und E-P7. Soweit zu den Zielgruppen…

      1. Nach der letzten OMDS-Werbemail dürfte das neue Supertele exakt auf die neue Motivgruppe Eichhörnchen ausgerichtet sein. 😉
        Nachdem ich weiß, wie schwierig es ist, das 300er mit MC14 ruhig zu halten (420 mm) und bei 2° Bildwinkel die Motive zu finden, ist das freihändige Draufhalten mit 600 mm sicher ein Spaß. 🙂

        1. @M. Aldinger. Ja, mit 600mm voll rein gezoomt ein Ziel zu finden wird noch schwieriger werden. Da hilft es erst mal mit weiterem Winkel das Ziel zu suchen und anschliessend rein zoomen. Leider werden heute keine push/pull Zooms mehr gebaut, nur noch alle mit dem Drehzoom, schade, denn push/pull zoomen wäre schneller.

          2. Das Sigma kann beim zoomen amuf leicht/schwergängig gestellt werden. In der Stufe „leicht“ kann man einfach das objektiv vorne anfassen und per push/pull zoomen. Geht wirklich gut. Mal schauen ob die OMDS Version das übernommen hat

            1. ah, gut. Aehnlich geht es auch beim mFT Pana-Leica 100-400mm; ist zwar bei dem nicht so vorgesehen, aber es funktioniert.

        2. Für Eichhörnchen braucht man kein Supertele, ein Sack Nüsse ist viel nützlicher. Dann reicht das 12-100.

    2. Die Hoffnung auf einen Nachfolger des FT 35-100 F2.0, ob nun von OMDS, Sigma oder Panasonic, schwindet bei mir mehr und mehr.
      Inzwischen informiere ich mich nach etwas mehr als 50 Jahren mit Olympus immer intensiver bei der Konkurrenz nach geeigneten Alternativen, um im Falle eines Defekts meines FT 35-100 nicht unter Zeitdruck suchen zu müssen.

  3. Ich habe das Sigma 150-600 in der neuen Variante für meine Lumix S1R. Die Bildqualität ist gut bis sehr gut, auch an dem 47MP Chip! Allerdings sind die 20 MP bei MFT nochmal eine Schippe mehr. Um Vignettierung wird man sich aber keine Gedanken machen müssen…
    Spannend wird der AF-Speed, da die S1R einen eher gemütlichen AF hat und ich genau aus diesem Grund meine OM1 nutze, sie ist die Actionkamera 😉
    Wenn sich der Preis in die Region des Sigma Originals bewegen sollte, bin ich auf Tests gespannt. Das 150-400 ist halt preislich eine ganz andere Region. Bei mehr als 2000€ wäre ich bei der Optik vermutlich raus.
    Spannend wird wieder mal die Anbindung des IS: machen sie diesmal echten Sync AF oder wieder diese Krüppelversion wie beim 100-400? Das ist für mich auch ein wichtiges Feature für einen akzeptablen Preis…

    Die ganz wichtige Frage: wie hätte eine echte MFT Entwicklung aussehen können? Viel kleiner? Ein 150-600 als vergrößertes 75-300 wäre mal wieder ein echtes Argument für MFT gewesen. Wenn es die Größe des Originals beibehält, wird es deutlich schwerer als das 150-400. es hat zwar mehr Brennweite, aber auch die schlechtere Öffnung.

    Schauen wir mal, was wir nächste Woche zu sehen bekommen und beim FolyFos wird es viele Kommentare geben, egal was kommt …

    Danach waren die Spekulationen, dass es sich um das angepasste Sigma-Objektiv handelt, wohl nicht falsch.
