First the bad news: in my last annual review for 2022, I predicted that a camera and two lenses would arrive in 2023. Half a camera arrived – the TG-7 – and the 90 mm macro.
My apologies: At the time, I only reproduced what OMDS officials officially claimed on YouTube in Germany.
2023 was a catastrophic year for OMDS. The managing director was dismissed with immediate effect and a former warehouse clerk was appointed in her place. In the meantime, the annual financial statements for 2021/2022 and 2022/2023 are already due. The credit rating of the German GmbH has plummeted and the managing directors are based abroad.
Only a few of the TG-7 were produced, and shortly after its market launch, the camera was no longer an issue. The macro was also hardly available at first and when it was available, it was no longer an issue. OMDS attracted attention above all with discounts. Stock clearance was firmly denied – although it is known that the authorization to use the brand name “Olympus” is expiring and everything must be relabeled from January 1st – right down to the manuals and warranty cards. This means that all equipment that was not sold at a discount in time has to be repackaged.
In the summer, I finally stepped on the toes of the head of Europe so thoroughly that he informed me that he wanted to take action against me. And the official forum banned me. Just mentioning my name, an abbreviation or a web address can supposedly lead to sanctions. You have to manage that first.
Apparently, the incident caused such a stir that a message about the closure of pen-and-tell in the well-known rumor portal was removed from the web after a few hours and the operator of the portal felt compelled to lie to my face. People from the OMDS environment spread the worst stories about me in American forums – including claims that I had doxed some girls in Coimbra.
That was also reported in Tokyo, they investigated and found out: It was all a lie. What Wagner writes and says is true. So a few people in Europe and America got a friendly hint that there is such a thing as “corporate governance” – and that they should stop slandering journalists.
Europe has now tried for a while to just give me garbage answers to my questions and when I didn’t buy it, they put a complete ban on me. Nobody is allowed to answer my questions anymore, I can’t be mentioned, I no longer exist. The only person who still replies to me is the autoresponder.
That only bothered me to a limited extent, because I’ve never received any substantial answers from the people at OMDS Europe anyway. Never on internal matters anyway and on technical matters – I can count the information I’ve received in three years on one hand.
In any case, I briefly had no desire to continue pen-and-tell. But after a few days and some information from Tokyo, I decided to carry on. Why? Maybe I am a fanboy after all.
So I’m going to keep going, not let OMDS get away with all the nonsense they get up to, write books, answer questions. And take photos. Because just because a few people in a company skip their jobs doesn’t make the cameras any worse.
At the end of the year, the G9II came out, which was already described as the nail in the coffin for OMDS – including by me. It’s just that Panasonic prioritized – excellent – marketing over technology and launched an immature camera at the perfect time. I’m no longer so sure which is better: launching a good camera far too late or a bad one at the perfect time….
In the meantime, it has become customary for me to answer questions that I receive by e-mail in public. And – surprise – it’s like school. You’re always happy when someone else asks the question. And I have now decided to make the site bilingual for good. No – the FolyFos will remain in German and this blog will also be written in German. But I think that in time I’ll also be able to keep up with the conversation in USA and UK.
I won’t make any predictions for next year this time.
Mit Vorhersagen ist das immer so eine Sache, oft entscheidet der Zufall, ob das vorhergesagte zutrifft oder nicht. Ansonsten, mach weiter so. Es könnte tatsächlich bald zu ende sein mit OMDS. Das ist keine Vorhersage, sondern mein Gefühl. Auf ein neues System werde ich jedenfalls nicht mehr umsteigen. Vielleicht kaufe ich mir dann noch ein Objektiv vom Schlussverkauf.

Tja, Reinhard. Auch wenn man fotografisch (theoretisch und praktisch) oft auf unterschiedlichen Planeten unterwegs ist – meine Meinung: Jeder Kamerahersteller müßte sich nach einem Typen wie Dir doch die Finger lecken… Jeder? Alle? Nein, eine Gruppe der weithin u.a. als Marketing-Knallchargen bekannten OMDSapiens widersetzt sich hartnäckig und (ich vermute mal) wider besseren Wissens. 2024 wird also auch diesbezüglich spannend werden.

Wenn ich eine eigene Kamera-Firma hätte, dann würde ich
denjenigen, dessen Name nicht erwähnt werden darf ( 😉 )
in meiner Kamera-Firma einstellen, damit er meine Kameras
testet, Verbesserungsvorschläge macht und auf sonstige
Probleme in den Kameras und in der Firma achtet.
Aber andere Firmen haben wohl andere Prioritäten (und
mir fehlt das nötige Kleingeld um eine Kamera-Firma zu
gründen).

Ich finde es schade, dass die Gerüchte jetzt nur noch im (Video)Stammtisch verbreitet werden.
Bei den Rabatten zur OM1 hatte es mich schon in den Fingern gejuckt – aber so lange OMDS (oder “starke” Gerüchte) nicht den Eindruck erwecken, dass das System weiter gepflegt (Firmwares?) und erweitert wird…
Es gibt auch genügend andere Hobbys zum Geld versenken…
Gerüchte sind eine heikle Sache, vor allem wenn sie Copy&Paste zugänglich sind. Was man mündlich noch sagen kann, weil da Mimik und Gestik von Bedeutung sind, ist bei der Verschriftlichung problemlos aus dem Zusammenhang zu reißen.
Niemand zahlt mir etwas dafür, dass ich mich hier aus dem Fenster lehne. Also lasse ich das bleiben. Es gibt Gerüchteportale, die sich mit ihrem Quatsch ne goldene Nase verdienen. Ohne mich.

natürlich sind Gerüchte immer ein willkommener Anlass, sich mit einer Firma, deren Verkaufs- oder Marketingstrategien etc. auseinander zu setzen! Bei den FolyFos sind dies sicher auch meist die lustigsten Teile, wenn Karten hochgezeigt werden … aber über all die Auseinandersetzung mit OMDS, deren Geschäftsführung, den Japanern und all diesen Dingen sollten wir doch nicht vergessen, dass wir mit unseren Olympus ein Kamerasystem haben, mit dem man, wenn man es kann, eigentlich auch ganz gut fotografieren kann. Und darauf sollte es nach meiner Vorstellung auch künftig ankommen. Fotografieren, Ideen entwickeln und realisieren, gute Fotos machen …
Fast alle Fotozeitschriften haben im Schwerpunkt Tests von irgendwelchen Neuprodukten! Ich habe aber eigentlich mit meinen 66 Lebensjahren und Kameras seit einer Voigtländer oder OM-2 aus analogen Zeiten bis hin zur digitalen OM-1 schon so viel Kameras, Objektive, Balgengeräte, Filter und all diesen Rumpel erworben …. Lass uns uns bitte in Zukunft wieder mehr mit der Fotografie beschäftigen. Lass uns das Monatsthema wieder aufleben lassen!
Ein bin ein begeisterter Leser Deines Blogs, das weißt Du! Bitte mach weiter so und leg den Finger in die Wunde! Bitte fordere weiterhin ein, dass Kameras durch wirkliche Firmwareupdates auch besser gemacht werden. Bitte ermahne auch weiterhin die Führungsetagen von OMDS sich um eine ehrliche und eine alle Kunden und Nutzer (die zum Teil wie ich schon seit etwa 50 Jahren an die Marke glauben) ansprechende Produktentwicklung und -verbesserung zu kümmern! Bitte mach weiter so!
Aber bitte auch keine Resignation! Die OMDS- Welt werden wir alle und Du mit „pen and tell“ nur sehr langsam verbessern. Lass uns weiterhin zusammenstehen, Freude an der Fotografie haben, uns treffen, weil es wieder geht!

Hopefully we will see more deeds from OMDS in H1 2024. I am still very happy with M43 as a format. On the other hand there is plenty of potential an OM-1 and future cameras could offer in terms of user interface/customization/video and photo functions. Maybe Tokyo will listen to us finally in 2024, they had been collecting user feedback since the OM-1 release. Good light to you, Reinhard.
Lass dich weiterhin nicht verbiegen…man kann nur hoffen, dass die klügeren Köpfe in Japan das Schiff wieder in ruhigere Fahrwasser bekommen und sich das Treiben ihrer US und europäischen Marketinger nicht mehr lange gefallen lassen.

Danke, dass Sie pen-and-tell weiterführen. Ihr Blog ist für mich immer die erste Anlaufstelle, und es ist sensationell, wie viel Wissenswertes man hier lesen kann, obwohl es von OMDS kaum noch neue Produkte gibt.
Trotzdem bin ich mittlerweile wieder vorsichtig optimistisch. Schlechtes Marketing heisst noch lange nicht, dass die Produkte schlecht sind. MFT ist für mich, der gerne unauffällig und auf Reisen fotografiert, nach wie vor ein tolles Format.
